Tom Sannicandro

Tom Sannicandro has been a leader in Massachusetts in empowering individuals with disabilities. As the father of an adult son with Down syndrome, the topics of disability and inclusion are important to him personally, as well as professionally.

Before coming to the ICI, Tom was a state representative in Massachusetts for 12 years, where he served as the chair of the Joint Committee on Higher Education. He sponsored a number of groundbreaking initiatives, including the Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Program, which enables students with intellectual or developmental disabilities to attend Massachusetts public colleges and universities. Tom also sponsored the Real Lives Bill, giving individuals served by the Department of Developmental Services control over their lives by controlling their budgets.

Tom’s PhD dissertation at Brandeis University focused on increasing access to higher education opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

For more than 15 years, Tom has been a disability attorney, representing students and families to enforce their educational rights, as well as the other legal issues that arise for people with disabilities and their families.
